The Importance of Representation

Representation matters. It’s not just about seeing people who look like you in media or leadership—it’s about validating experiences, breaking barriers, and inspiring hope. For people of colour, representation can mean the difference between feeling seen and feeling invisible in a world that often centers whiteness.

Seeing diverse role models in positions of power or influence sends a powerful message: success is attainable, and your dreams are valid. Representation can also combat harmful stereotypes, providing a fuller, more nuanced picture of what it means to be a person of colour. When children see themselves reflected in books, TV shows, or classrooms, it shapes their self-perception and aspirations.

If you have the opportunity, be a part of creating representation in your sphere. Whether it’s mentoring others, sharing your story, or occupying spaces where people of colour are underrepresented, your visibility matters. Every step you take helps create a more inclusive world where everyone has a chance to thrive.
